As adults, stone crabs' carapaces can grow to 3.5 centimeters (35 millimeters) in width.

Diet:

As juveniles, these crabs consume zooplankton. As they grow, they use their claws to catch and feed on barnacles, clams, conch and scallops.

Range & Habitat:

These crabs can be found along the Atlantic coast and Gulf coast of Florida in seagrass beds and sandy bottom areas.

Details:

Stone crabs have smooth, brown, oval carapaces. They have five pairs of short legs with reddish yellow hairs. Male stone crabs are larger in size than their female counterparts.
