Marine Biomedical Research REU

Internship Mentor: Dr. Sam Vielee

In Mote’s Marine Biomedical Research Program, we are interested in how early life exposures to brevetoxins may lead to neurological conditions (e.g., neurodegenerative diseases) later in life. Brevetoxins are a natural marine toxin produced by red tides (Karenia brevis) and are known neurotoxins; however, we lack a detailed understanding for brevetoxin neurotoxicity across the lifespan. Here, we use cell culture and Caenorhabditis elegans models to investigate how short-term exposures to brevetoxin may lead to neurotoxicity.
